What is a Serial?
Serials are print or non-print publications issued in parts, usually bearing issue numbers, issue dates, or both. A serial is expected to continue indefinitely. Serials include magazines, newsletters, newspapers, annuals (such as reports, yearbooks, and directories), journals, memoirs, proceedings, transactions of societies and numbered series.

Serials are an essential and integral component of every major research library collection because the information they contain reflects the most current developments in all fields of activity.  The basic nature of the serials publishing process insures that their "sequential products" are distributed in a timely fashion; timeliness is fundamental to their relevance.  It logically follows that efficient processing of these materials is key to providing the necessary timely access to them.

The importance of serial collections cannot be over emphasized in library’s operations particularly in academic libraries, because it provides the users with up-to-date information that can assist them in their academic pursuit (Owolabi, Aderibigbe, Okorie and Ibrahim, 2012).

Importance of serials in academic environment for students:

    • Serial provides up –to -date information on any issue than textbooks.

    • It supplies scientific discoveries and results of latest findings.

    • It makes researchers frequent and current in the frontiers of knowledge.

    • It provides a first hand and detailed information on a particular subject.

    • It provides empirical evidence on issue being treated.
